
About Marina Yap
Marina Yap is a registered Clinical Psychologist. She graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1996 with a Second Upper Honours degree in Psychology. Marina subsequently obtained a Masters of Clinical Psychology from the University of Queensland of Australia. She is also a qualified social worker.
Over the years, Marina has practised clinical psychology in a wide range of settings (eg. psychiatric unit, geriatric clinic, private medical clinic, general medical wards, neurorehabilitation centre and private organisations). They include the Institute of Mental Health, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Rehabilitation Centre, Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre and Camden Medical Centre.
Marina has been running her current clinic since 2015. She has a special interest in psychiatric disorders such as mood-related issues, anxiety disorders, grief and bereavement as well as post-traumatic stress disorders. She also sees couples for therapy, apart from conducting neuropsychological assessments.
Experience as a Clinical Psychologist
Marina has received formal training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, Hypnosis, Parts Therapy as well as the Gottman Couples Therapy. Depending on the needs and issues faced by her clients, she will utilize the appropriate counselling approach during consultation. Besides having numerous years of clinical experience, she used to teach psychology at a tertiary institution for several years.
At the organisational level, Marina began her crisis management work in 1997 (Silk Air ME-185 plane accident), when she was a part of the Emergency Behaviour Officer Team that helped provide care and emotional support to family members and traumatised members of the public. In 2003, Marina also played an important role in providing crisis counselling and group debriefing for affected staff at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital during the Sars outbreak.
Subsequently, she assisted several private organisations by providing psychological support for their affected staff and relatives in the event of a crisis (eg. suicide, industrial accidents). Other than mitigating and managing traumatic stress, her role in crisis work aims to prevent possible adverse mental health outcomes.
